I’ve worked in some aspect of electronic media communication for over 20 years. I began my career as a video producer and director, then transitioned to multimedia production and then to online production. Programs I have written or produced have won industry awards from the International Television Association and the Society for Technical Communication and have appeared in your local record store (The Artist FKA Prince “Interactive”) and at newstands across France (H-F “Explor’us” ecommerce CD-ROM.)

In 2007 I left my staff position and started Doing Media, a media consultancy. I worked in web content management buisness analyst at USAA from 2005 to 2007. I joined the staff at USAA in San Antonio as a web producer in 1998, part of the origianl team that launched usaa.com. I migrated from New Jersey in 1988 and established a successful video and multimedia production business in Southern California. My first corporate staff position was at ADP in 1984; I was a staff producer/director. After graduate school in 1983 I freelanced as a director, lighting director and cameraman for many Fortune 100 media departments in the New York metropolitan area.

As part of my professional mission I have spoken and conducted seminars at conferences across the United States and have been an adjunct (itinerant) college instructor. I’m a big believer in professional networking. I am a founding member of the Content Management Professionals association (CM Pros). I’ve served as national president of the Media Communications Association-International, (MCA-I — formerly ITVA) in 2000-2001. I have received numerous association service awards, including the MCA-I’s Chuck Webb Award in 2005 for exceptional service to the organization and a special Board of Director’s Award in 2001.

I was selected to participate in an 18 month graduate internship program at Brooklyn College, part of the City University of New York. I was one of 12 students, selected each fall, to work and study television production and programming, leading to an M.S. in Television Production. I was selected as lead intern and assistant production manager for the Brooklyn College Television Center. In the summer of 1982 I was selected as one of two interns to the annual meeting of the Television Conference Foundation, a summer think tank retreat for television and cable executives. Most interesting grad school memory: getting shot with a pellet gun while moving some scenery between buildings and learning more than I ever wanted to know about the NYC emergency medicine system.

I received my B.A. in Communications from William Paterson University of New Jersey. After completing my undergraduate communications coursework in my junior year, I had two semesters of independent study, acting as a teaching assistant in a graduate television production course and establishing a local high school television program.

When not working, blogging or teaching, I enjoy time with my family, travel, music (a guitar was my “mid-life crisis” purchase), woodworking and general puttering around the house.
