The first time (I thought) that New Media was a upon us was in the ’90s. (There was even a magazine called New Media.) It was the heyday of CD-ROM, video laserdisc and postage stamp QuickTime movies.
The second time (I thought) that New Media came upon us again was in the ’00s with digital video, podcasting and user generated content.
Boy was I wrong! All of this New media wouldn’t be possible without the experimenters from Radical Software magazine. Read the History section of the site and you’ll read many references to the concepts of democratization of media based on portable and cheap equipment.
So, what do you think will be the next “new” media?

New media, rich media, multimedia are fundamentally all the same. It’s all becoming web-based communication – a mashup of data, message, and custom-delivered content. It’s “narrow-casting.” Big Fortune XXX companies have a presence on the web, but there is also a website devoted to helping left-handers learn to crochet. Many of the products shown at last week’s CES simplify the process of web-TV integration. As the capabilities become easier (and less costly) to use, the web will provide limitless access to a wealth of highly individualized content. So What’s “new” about new media? Nothing, and everything. http://tpmmorse.wordpress.com/2009/04/13/what%e2%80%99s-new-in-new-media/
Thanks for the comment Tom. The last line was rhetorical but it WILL be interesting to see what technology people will call the next “new” media.
